The period leading up to Christmas is a special time in Norway, as the shorter and darker days make for a very cozy time of year. Smoke can frequently be seen from the many chimneys around the country, and candles light up homes during the cold months of November and December.
One way to experience how Scandinavians welcome in the Christmas season is by visiting a Christmas market, or Julemarked. You will be able to shop for authentic Norwegian gifts, from home made wool sweaters, Scandinavian art work, and too many gift ideas to list. There is always music, snacks and warm and cold drinks available. Most Norwegian towns and cities like Trondheim and Oslo also offer holiday concerts. If you are lucky, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.
